Ray Lewis. On a bike? Really? I’ve got to see that. That is the initial reaction you hear from many people when they first hear about Ray Lewis and RL52 Cycling. But when The Washington Nationals’ Strength and Conditioning Coach John Philbin first heard about RL52 Cycling’s concept to bring cross training on the bike to team sports athletes he had a different reaction.  He couldn’t wait to bring it to his players.  So last week he did just that.  Philbin worked out a few of his players with Ray Lewis in the “4th Quarter Grind” SpinerVALS Team Sports Training Vol.  2. and said, “They really liked it.  They are really excited about implementing these workouts and think this type of conditioning will be extremely valuable for their off-season training.”  This past summer Ray Lewis teamed up with Troy Jacobson of SpinerVALS and released the 2 groundbreaking workouts for team sports athletes: No LIMITS! and 4th Quarter Grind.

The RL52 Cycling team is consulting with Philbin as we develop our team sports training programs.  The Pre and Post Season Baseball Program that uses low-impact intense cycling workouts to condition the energy systems and complement baseball’s sports specific conditioning program has already been created.  Philbin believes that although baseball is primarily an anaerobic sport, conditioning his athletes’ aerobic energy systems as well, will ultimately increase their overall anaerobic capacity which can lead to performance gains, increased stamina and reduced injuries. “The cycling workouts in this program will definitely increase overall fitness in a way that sprint work alone can’t. A conditioned athlete is a better athlete, no matter what the sport.”

Philbin is no stranger to high intensity training.  He is a former Olympic and NFL speed and conditioning coach, whose renowned techniques are based upon his best-selling book, High Intensity Training. He has 30 years experience in the industry and has made a significant impact across the country and worldwide as a nationally recognized presenter for the United States Olympic Committee on athletic speed and explosive development and injury prevention.  He is also the President of the National Strength Professionals Association (NSPA), which is an internationally recognized certification and education agency for strength conditioning coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, post rehabilitation specialists, personal trainers and coaches. NSPA has been chosen as one of the Elite certification providers for the Cooper Fitness Institute and has certified over 30,000 professional educators across the country.
